How to Read a Telehealth Provider's Privacy Policy in 2 Minutes

You don't need to read the whole thing. Here's exactly what to search for.

Nobody reads an entire privacy policy start to finish, and you don't need to. Here's what to actually scan for, in order, in about two minutes.

First: search for "third parties" or "share"

This section tells you who else gets access to your information — pharmacy partners (expected and necessary), marketing platforms (worth noting), or vaguely-described "partners" (worth being more cautious about).

Second: search for "marketing" or "advertising"

This tells you whether your health information specifically gets used for anything beyond your actual treatment — a legitimate provider's policy should be clear that medical evaluation data isn't repurposed for ad targeting.

Third: search for "delete" or "retention"

This tells you whether you have any real path to having your data removed, and how long they keep it if you don't ask.

What a vague answer to any of these means

If a policy is written broadly enough that you genuinely can't tell the answer to any of these three questions after searching, that vagueness is itself useful information — worth weighing against everything else you like about a specific provider.
